Saturday morning a group of us from Seminary Church went downstairs to tackle the clean up of the youth room. Cheryl spent a few hours steam cleaning the furniture, I moved some stuff around and talked a lot, Everett moved the heavy stuff, made plans to move the cleaning supplies into the back room, and take some of the furniture we are not planning on using to St. Vincent DePaul's. Mike tackled the foosball game and the ping pong table and Rhiannon spent some time putting a huge box of napkins into plastic bags. It was a good morning and we got a lot done, but the room still needs more work. If you have a chance, take a walk downstairs and take a look at what is happening down there. And then ask Cheryl what you can do to help!
The youth group received an anonymous donation of $600.00 with the suggestion that the money be used to by a Wii gaming system for our youth! What a GREAT IDEA! I'm ready to play some Wii golf and tennis! OOOPs, it's for the kids.....
Last, but probably not least, I was listening to a podcast of a sermon this afternoon as I took the dogs for their afternoon walk. Rev. Adam Hamilton from the Church of the Resurrection was preaching on sloth. Blah, sloth.... Anyway, he said that any pastor who specializes in "Saturday night specials"(that means a pastor writes their sermon on Saturday night) was dealing with a problem of sloth. He went on to say that the most important part of a pastor's ministry is preaching. It takes one hour of sermon prep for each minute of a sermon. So, if a pastor is not spending at least 10-15 hours on a sermon each week, the congregation and the ministry of the church suffers. Hum.....I don't do Saturday night specials (WAY to stressful and anxiety provoking for me), but I am making a concerted effort to get a couple of blocks of study and writing time each week to improve my sermons. I'm even asking some of the more analytical minds in the Seminary congregation to "critique" me and help me know what worked and what didn't work in the sermon.
You all have a great week. Thanks for participating in the sermon this morning. Get your thinking caps on because I plan to have you participate each week during this sermon series. God gave us these brains for a reason!
Peace, Kathy
